Towels are an item that get washed often and over a long life span, so they often do end up with residue in them. To check, run a hot wash cycle with no detergent and look for any bubbles in the wash water. If there are none, you are good to go. If there are bubbles, repeat the hot wash / no detergent until there are no more bubbles showing up. No need to dry between wash cycles.
